CIS tax refund See whether you overpaid
Taxed at 20% or 30% as a subcontractor? We work out whether you overpaid and claim it back, at a fixed fee.
Overview
Construction Industry Scheme deductions are taken on account of your tax, not as your final bill. Once your expenses and allowances are counted, some subcontractors have paid too much, though not everyone is due a refund. We calculate it, claim it and keep the process clear.
Who it’s for
- Subcontractors taxed at 20% under CIS
- Subcontractors taxed at 30% because they were not registered
- Construction workers with a pile of unclaimed expenses
- Those who have not filed returns for earlier years
- Workers who have moved between contractors or stopped work
What we do
- Check your deductions: We reconcile CIS statements against what you were paid and what HMRC holds.
- Claim your expenses: We identify allowable costs, such as tools and protective clothing, and claim them.
- Calculate your refund: You see the figure and how we reached it before we file.
- File with HMRC: We submit your return and chase the repayment as your tax agent.
- Fix the 30% rate: If you were not registered, we help you register and put it right.
- Catch up earlier years: We look back to see whether past years also hold a refund.

CIS refund questions
Why was I taxed at 20% or 30%?
Contractors deduct 20% from registered subcontractors and 30% from those who are not registered. These deductions are paid on account of your tax rather than being the final amount. After expenses and allowances, you may well have paid too much.
How do I claim a CIS refund?
Self-employed subcontractors normally claim through Self Assessment, where deductions are set against your tax bill and any excess is repaid. Subcontractors working through a limited company claim in a different way. We work out the right route and handle the paperwork.
Which expenses can I claim?
Allowable expenses can include tools, protective clothing, insurance and work-related travel, though not ordinary commuting, provided they are wholly and exclusively for your work. We go through your records and claim what is allowable, and nothing that is not.
How long will the refund take?
It depends on HMRC's processing times, which vary, so we cannot promise a date. Once your return is filed, we keep track of it, follow up with HMRC where needed and tell you as soon as the repayment is confirmed.
