VAT questions

When must I register for VAT?

You must register when your taxable turnover goes over the registration threshold set by HMRC, or if you expect it to within the next 30 days. You can also register voluntarily below it. We will confirm the current threshold and your position.

How often do I file a VAT return?

Most businesses file quarterly, although some use annual accounting or, in certain cases, monthly returns. Filing and payment are generally due one month and seven days after the end of the VAT period. We keep a diary of your deadlines.

Do I have to use Making Tax Digital for VAT?

Yes. VAT-registered businesses must keep digital records and file VAT returns through MTD-compatible software, and this has applied to all of them since April 2022. We can file for you or help you set up software that does it.

Which VAT scheme is best for me?

Schemes such as Flat Rate, Cash Accounting and Annual Accounting can improve cash flow or simplify admin, but they suit some businesses and not others. The right choice depends on your turnover, costs and customers. We compare the options and recommend one in writing.
