Making Tax Digital questions
Who has to use Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
Self-employed people and landlords whose qualifying income is above the relevant level. It is being introduced in stages, starting with the highest incomes, so the date that applies to you depends on your income. We will confirm your start date.
What actually changes?
You keep digital records and send HMRC quarterly updates through compatible software, then finish with a final declaration after the tax year ends. For those in scope, this replaces the single annual Self Assessment return as the way you report your income.
Do I need special software?
Yes. You need software that is compatible with Making Tax Digital and can connect to HMRC. Spreadsheets can still work, but only alongside bridging software. We help you choose a tool that suits your size and habits, and we set it up.
Can you do the quarterly updates for me?
Yes. Many clients ask us to prepare and submit their updates from the records they keep. We agree what is included and the fee in advance, so you know the cost of staying compliant before you begin.
